Although quality of practice matters more than quantity (see What to practice), a good rule of thumb is to make your child's daily practice the same length of time as the piano lesson. For example, a child who has a 30-minute lesson should practice 30 minutes a day.
You can divide practice time into shorter chunks, like two 15-minute blocks or three 10-minute blocks. Piano practice cannot be "crammed." Your child will not learn the physical and mental routines for playing the piano by practicing for 2 hours one day and not at all for the rest of the week. Piano practice must be a daily event so incremental learning can be consolidated over time. |
