Problem: My child becomes frustrated when a piece isn't perfect right away.
Try these:
Reassure your child that no one expects the music to sound perfect the first time. Playing the piano is complicated!
Ask your child to play you a part of the music that comes easily. Enjoy the moment together; play it a few times.
Ask your child to pick out a spot in the music that is difficult. Start with a very small chunk (even just 2 notes). Try some of the Monster-taming tacticsto get it to sound right.
Don't try to tame too many monsters in one practice session. Set a manageable goal and ask your child to set aside the rest of the trouble spots for another day.
Incorporate short breaks into your practice sessions. Ask your child to keep trying until it is time for the next break. Use a timer so it is easy to know when the next break will be. A break is a good time for a cuddle, a sprint around the house, or a breath of fresh air outside.
Encourage your child to review pieces he or she already knows well as part of each practice session.
