Problem: My child is having trouble playing with the correct hand position.
Correct hand position means:
Fingers curved (not flat)
Wrist in line with the arm (not drooping)
Fingertips firm (not bent backward)
Try these:
Keep your child's fingernails trimmed short. If the nail prevents the meaty part of the fingertip from contacting the key, it will be impossible to play with the correct hand position.
Ask your child to let the hands hang relaxed at the sides of the body. Now bend the elbow and raise the hand to playing position, keeping the relaxed curve of the hand and the straightened wrist. This is the starting point for the correct hand position.
Use your phone's camera or a mobile app like Coach's Eye to take a short video of your child playing. Watch the video together. Stop or slow the action see where the hand moves in or out of the correct position. Children will often self-correct readily after seeing their hands in action.
