Problem: My child is anxious about performing for an audience.
Try these:
Conduct a mini-recital at home for an audience of stuffed animals, pets, or family members. Use the guide below to practice approaching the piano, dealing with mistakes, and bowing.
Once in a while, phone a grandparent or close friend and ask your child to play a piece of music for them to listen to.
Reassure your child that musicians need to practice performing just like we practice learning our music. If you make a mistake during a performance, it is not the end of the world. As you get used to performing it will be easier not to be nervous.
Let the teacher know if your child is extremely anxious about performing. With some advance planning there are ways the teacher can be supportive during public recitals.
